Reflections on My Internship Experience

 By Aleisha Julian, MBWC Intern

Graduating from college is an overwhelming experience – even more so when you factor in the tough economy.  Now more than ever, it’s crucial for graduates to gain more than classroom knowledge if they expect to stand out in such a competitive job market.  Internships provide the perfect opportunity to hone essential professional skills – and keep a leg up on the competition.  My internship experience with Mary Beth West Consulting has been invaluable in developing both the professional knowledge and confidence necessary in preparing for a career in the public relations field.

I do not remember fully my expectations for my first day as an intern.  What I do remember is that within 30 minutes I was hard at work on a project for a client.  Within my first week, I completed two news releases, five outreach letters and many hours of research.  The team never expressed anything but confidence in my ability to perform the tasks directed my way and never hesitated in taking the time to answer my questions or provide encouraging feedback and advice.  After six months of working with some of the most experienced and knowledgeable professionals in the industry, I’ve come away with numerous lessons learned – both professional and personal – and a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for the individuals I work with.

That said, I’m going to miss coming to work and facing new and exciting challenges.  Rarely were two days ever the same, which taught me the importance of keeping on my toes and welcoming new challenges.  While my education has provided me with the tools and fundamentals necessary for a career in public relations, I feel the practical experience gained during my internship with Mary Beth West Consulting has made the transition into the “real world” a little less intimidating.  This position has been such an exciting learning experience.  With so many unanswered questions concerning my future running through my mind, it’s reassuring that I don’t feel the need to question my readiness or ability to take the next step.
